Atazuregn - Stories for children, Amharic – English, written, edited and published by 'Writers for Ethiopian Children'; Lead illustrators Atlabachew Reda and Abyalew Assefa, Printed by Elleni Printers, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2011

What have a pop star visiting Addis, a dog beaten by its owner, a girl scoring a match-winning goal, quarrelling cousins and an Anglo-Egyptian flying machine all got in common? The answer is that each feature in one of the latest illustrated book of short stories by Writers for Ethiopian Children.

Atazuregn is the eighth in the series of bilingual books for children. It is published in 2011 and distributed in Ethiopia by the Writers for Ethiopian Children collectively. Like its predecessors, the title echoes a popular name of a traditional children’s game. Atazuregn is the catch-phrase of a boisterous spinning game and the six tales in the book contain many bumps and surprises. The global pop idol is a lonely teenager, envious of the freedom of ordinary Ethiopian kids. Ambitious Yonas – who features in the book’s strip cartoon - and the quarrelling cousins all learn morals the hard way. In ‘The Flying Pyramid’ science fiction meets ecology and romance in a tale triggered by the chance meeting of a Chinese technician and a clever boy in Debre Zeit. Learning each others’ alphabets later leads to scientific cooperation and a new era in flight which brings Chinese, Egyptians and Ethiopian closer together. In all six authors and illustrators have again created an engaging set of characters and stories which will entertain and educate Ethiopians at home and abroad.

It is a suitable read for children in their early teens.
